Texan writer Aaron Allston has intended for several years to attend Conestoga, and missed his opportunity in 2009 only because of a heart attack. Best known for his Star Wars novels (the Wraith Squadron trilogy, the Enemy Lines duology, the Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi series), Allston also writes original fantasy and science fiction and role-playing games. In 2006, he was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design Hall of Fame. He makes his home in Central Texas with four eccentric houemates and four eccentric cats.

Returning to Oklahoma to attend the University of Tulsa, she earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts and has had the sense to stay put ever since, although she dodges the occasional tornado. She taught elementary school for more years than she cares to admit and retired in 2003.

She got her start winning in the Writers of the Future Contest in 1988, and then later won the Field Publications Teachers as Writers Award in 1991. She has published nine novels and sold over fifty short stories to such markets as Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Aboriginal Science Fiction, Pulphouse, Return to the Twilight Zone, Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Realms of Fantasy. She attributes her success to having two very large dogs and a wonderful husband, not necessarily in that order.

Lane Robins
website   blog

Lane Robins was born in Miami, Florida, the daughter of two scientists, and grew up as the first human member of their menagerie. When it came time for a career, it was a hard choice between veterinarian and writer. It turned out to be far more fun to write about blood than to work with it. She received her BA in Creative Writing from Beloit College, is a graduate of Odyssey workshop, and currently lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with an ever-fluctuating number of dogs and cats. She writes high fantasy under Lane Robins and urban fantasy under Lyn Benedict.

Lee Killough
website

At age eleven Lee Killough discovered and fell in love with SF/fantasy and Mysteries. Afraid of exhausting her favorite genres' supply in her small hometown library, she began writing her own stories...and rather than chose between the genres, she combined them as much as possible. The habit has stuck. Approximately half of her sixteen novels are SF or supernatural mysteries or urban fantasies. Her first short story appeared in Analog in 1970, and she published her first novel in 1979. Her SF short story "Symphony for a Lost Traveler" was a 1984 Hugo Award nominee. Yard Dog Press has published her African fantasy, The Leopard's Daughter, and a revised edition of Checking On Culture, an aid to building story backgrounds. At home in Kansas, she and her significant other Denny Riordan share their home with thousands of books and a thoroughly spoiled miniature Schnauzer. Currently in progress is an urban fantasy.

Margaret Middleton
website

I think the one from 2009 is good, other than that I'll be a year closer to retirement from the AHTD come-this-April.

Matt Champine

I won first place, third quarter, of the L. Ron Hubbards Writers of the Future in 2004, with my long, long short story, Sunrunners, oddly enough about a young man?s adventure on the Lunar frontier. Thanks to R. A. H., I was a wannabe writer from the sixth grade until that moment, and now I?m a wannabe PRO writer. I recently retired from the Postal Service so I can give full attention to said writing. Cue giggles now.

Peter Bradley
website

Peter Bradley is the son of two english refugee's who fled home due to utter boredom. So, despite any probable wish to the contrary, he became a world traveller before he could fully walk. This being contradicted by his parents statement that he ran the entire distance from Australia to America at the age of 3. Or at least it seemed so to the harried flight attendants. It's probably just as well the family flew, since Peter has yet to learn how to swim. Peter started drawing at an early age, inspired by a barely remembered TV series called Automan, and has been drawing steadily for the last 20 years or so. Currently he is working for Troll Lord Games on art for the Castles & Crusades rpg.

He is co-author (with John Wooley) of the horror novels Old Fears and Death's Door, and wrote for the comics series, Hellraiser, based on the Clive Barker movies. In past life, he was editor of the children's page, Trib Kids, for the Tulsa Tribune. He hoped ever so desperately that his wholesome kids' page readers wouldn't follow him into the pain-wracked pages of Hellraiser by mistake. In fact, the skink wished too hard: both the Epic comics magazine and the afternoon newspaper folded. He's glad to hear Tulsa didn't. Buy him a Coney Islander hot-dog with chili.

S. M. Sterling
website

Conestoga 14's Guest of Honor is S. M. Sterling, writer of alternate history novels. The Emberverse and Draka series' are some of his more prominent work. In the Emberverse books, the island of Nantucket is left behind when it became an "Island in the Sea of Time". Electricity, high gas pressures, and fast combustion (including explosives and gunpowder) no longer work in this world. The stories revolve around how different survivors and groups of people adapt and live in this changed environment. "I read history obsessively;" Sterling says in an interview for Locus Magazine, "it's been my second great love, outside of science fiction, since I was a teenager. And you always come across these points where things could have happened one way or another, just as easily. ... Another appeal of alternate history is that everyone has one of those turning points in their own life."

Allen of YDP fame is "Tinker's Damn" from the Science Fiction Trails anthology and has been compared to 'Pygmalian' meets 'Steampunk'. A long time costumer and active member of Fandom (co-chair of 2, count 'em 2 ConQuesTs in KC, Mo and no fatalities!) Sherri collects, among other things, non-fiction vampire books, commands armies of flying monkeys and is easily distracted by shiny objects. Talia Gryphon

Talia Gryphon lives in Oklahoma with her family and critters. During a fifteen year career in the non-exact science of mental health, it occurred to her that supernatural and preternatural beings she'd read about would have problems and issues of their own to deal with, but had no one to listen or take them on as patients or clients, so she began sketching out her thoughts, speculative psychological profiles, and possible diagnoses. Thoughts became notes, notes became pages, pages became books: hence the Gillian Key, ParaDoc Series was developed. She is a Board Certified Professional Counselor, a member of the American Psychotherapy Association, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and Horror Writers of America.

As a sailor, he is conversant in the capricious vagaries of the weather and the sea and as a historian, he is trained to research what he cannot experience first-hand. He loves old music, old trucks, old guns, and old dogs—but would give everything to go into space. William R. Eakin
website

While 70 some stories by William R. Eakin have appeared in the big genre magazines (like F&SF, scifi.com, Amazing Stories, etc.), and in fact have appeared seven times in Realms of Fantasy (most recently in the 15th Anniversary issue), they are intended to be strange in style: Baroque, playful, funky southern, but finally something that touches the heart (or as Shawna McCarthy says, messes with the "brain stem"). Sam'sdot is now releasing a multivolume collection! sam'sdot.com
